Wrong blog - Right thought

Those who had subscribed the blog by e-mail, might received the post “an opportunity to talk sex”, and had some difficulties to associate it to the Ingles Empresarial context. Actually it was not conceived to this blog, but we can always find something creative and good in it. Although I don’t understand nothing about online communities, I can do a bridge with other aspects related to school.

Starting with the title, I see the word “sex” as a metaphor. Is not “talk about sex” but “talk sex”. So “sex” here is more like a way of dealing with things, an social behavior, rather than the physical act that all might have thought. It is seeking for what one can get and not what one can give. To wait to be given rather than looking for ways to give. Is like criticizing the other, instead of looking for one’s owns mistakes. Unfortunetly this “sexual” vision not only happens in online communities, it happens everywere. For instance, we can see students that are only waiting to have a good mark copying and pasting internet texts, rather than thinking in ways of giving something useful to them and to their colleagues. Another example is in the oral presentations. Some spent all the classes criticizing the teacher, but when they are presenting something, they do even worst mistakes than the teacher!

Gladly, there is the “love” vision. Is not a pinky colored philosophy, but one hard path were one must keep going even without positive feedback , keep experimenting and keep getting it wrong in order to make it better. And one have to keep his eye on the ball and remember the bigger reasons why he is doing it. Most of this work is invisible to people. Specially to those who keep their attention focused only in the school marks, and what is the interest in talking with this or that colleague, rather than learning something useful to life, and having the sensitivity, persistence and imagination to deal with people and problems in a harmonious way.

These are the two main ideas that I can get from the post, it would be nice to see if other students could share their oppinion about it too.

First week over

So a new semester begins. Suddenly I lost one of my turmas (P562) and won another (P461). It feels a bit strange just getting to know people and then to find out that you're not going to be working with them. But everything else is looking good. The general linguistic level is very much higher than previous years.

I hope some students will come and join me and Eduardo in writing this blog.

Obrigatório Vs Opção

I could not leave my comment, so I have to blog it.
Inglês Empresarial shoud be obrigatório since the first to the last year of our graduation. The majority of the courses in our school are based in management, and as the world is getting global day by day, management is also getting global too. So to be a good manager it means that one should communicate clear and objective. But the language barrier will limitate this managers only to Portugal or Spain, without awarness of what is happenig out there in the world.

But if one wants to be an Enterpreneur, and that should be the aim of our course, he has to develop real communication skills. English should be obrigatório every semester, in a way that we could compete with other European Managers. How we can compete with them, if we cannot understand a simple metting or seminarium in english? What is our advantage comparing to other Europeans Managers? I don't see many... More and more the portuguese companies are being managed by multinationals, it means that the strategical lines to portuguese reality are being developed outside the country. How can we adapt those strategies to the portuguese context if we do not even understand them? Probalby the Concelho Científico did not see the practical side of it (or is lost in political issues). Time is money. I have lost several business because I took to much time to answer (sometimes a few seconds), because it was in another language. Of course they were small business, but if we see in a larger scale, portuguese companies can lose profitable opportunities.

Actually, in my modest opinion, I think that we should have English obrigatório, and another language as an option. To be graduated with two different languages (or even more) would give us a good tool to operate in the competitive portuguese market that is getting global. What is the worth of a four year course, if one cannot apply it to the global reality?

Oral Presentation

I like to share my experience about my presentation. Preparing it was really hard! First of all, I have chosen a person to talk about (Tiago Monteiro) that I know quite well, so I had a lot of information about his career and also about the moments we spent toguether. Resuming that information and do the link to the enterpreneurs topic was not easy at all.

Motorsport (or automobile racing) is something that I'm used to, but the audience probably was the first time to hear something about it, so I have to adapt and simplify the ideas in order to give a clear structure that they could easily understand my story. I had to put myself in the audience's position, to know what would be the most important thing they would like to hear, because to me as an ex team-mate and fan of Tiago Monteiro everything was important! But the presentation was only about ten minutes...

Observation was crucial. I went to see other's presentations, and tried to see their mystakes, their strongest points (some of them really suprised me!) and how the audience was reacting to them. I observed also the way that teacher talk during the classes, that enthusiastic mood captured me. By observing the classroom, I've also noticed that it was too much white, so I thought it could be a good idea to bring something to colour it - an big image of my enterpreneur. I've made some contacts with companies that sponsored him, but unfortunately the "expositores" that they had were too old. I wanted his new Formula1 image!! During two weeks I've tried to find someone that had that image, and when I was about to give it up, I decided to talk with his father to see if he could help me. He gave me the contact of Galp's Marketing Manager, and although the "expositor" that Galp gave me (in the morning of my presentation's day) was not bigger as I wanted to be, it was his Formula one image. I finally got it!

While I was working on the structure and language, I wanted to finish the presentation with something really exciting. I thought it would be fantastic if I could video Tiago Monteiro giving the final words and concluding my story. The problem was the little time I had to prepare it - one month. I had to meet him, and to find some space in a Formula1 driver's agenda was not possible because he lives in London, and december has christmas, new year and is when the 2006 contracts are finally signed. Despite of being very busy, and after some phone calls and many e-mails, he managed to do a 15second video related to what I asked him. He was really nice! However, Tiago send me that video two days before the presentaiton but I had several problems to view it. I tried once again to call him, but he was testing in Spa-Francochamps, and his cell phone was off... Very upset I called his father and informed what had hapened.

Thus, in addiction to what had happened, on my presentation's day I had a team work discussion with Gestão Estratégica's teacher, and a Publicidade e Relações Públicas presentation. After doing them, I was a tired and sad about the video loss, so I went to my car to practice the English presentation and to relax a bit. Tiago called me! He said "Look, I'm going to catch a plane, my father said what happened to the video. I'm in the lounge room, is quiet here and I can send you by video call now". The problem was that I don't have video call on my cell phone... Thus I had to thank him very much for his attitude, and apologise for all the inconvinence that I did to him.

Once again, I lost the video...but I won the motivation that I needed to do a presentation from the heart. Actually, it was more a talk than a presentation. It was a real pleasure to do my first solo presentation of my life, talking about something that I have a emotional connection. At least, it was not useless those eleven years spent in the race tracks. Thanks to Ingles Empresarial, I could share it with my colleagues for some moments. Besides being very happy with the oral mark, the most important thing to me was this. To learn that nothing is usless, every experience helps us in the future.

Sorry for writting too much, but I thought that the context was so important as the techniques that I've used and teacher's help.

Some important moments in this last week

1. I feel very proud when I see students giving a good presentation (and when they write a good TWA) especially students who started the semester thinking they would never have the confidence or the language to be able to do it.

Although they do all the hard work I like to think I have something to do with it!

2. I also saw a really superb presentation by Eduardo. Two things that marked his presentation were:
a) He was speaking from his heart and not just from the words on a paper, written by someone else. He gave us an example of an entrepreneur he knows from his experience and he linked that experience with what has been written about entrepreneurs. This technique of combining examples and personal stories brings your presentation alive.
b) He did a lot of preparation and he practised and practised and practised.

I am going to video Eduardo doing his presentation again and will use it for future turmas when we are doing the unit on entrepreneurs.

3. I had an important e-mail dialogue with one student who felt that I didn't appreciate her work. Not only do I admire and respect her work but I also like the fact that she wrote to me.

Some good oral presentations

I felt very proud to see some of the oral presentations on Friday. I didn't see anyone who couldn't give a presentation in front of a professional audience in English. I really respect those students who are not confident to speak but who who persist during the semester, who ask for help in the preparation of their presentation, and who practice so much that they are able to give a perfectly understandable, enthusiastic and informed presentation.

In fact I have noticed that students who are less confident in the language often do better than those who are very confident. That must be because they pay attention to all the details - the structure, the content and the interaction with audience. People who start by thinking they know how to speak well in English sometimes forget that speaking language without making mistakes is NOT the same as giving a good presentation. I should know! How many terrible presentations I have seen given by people whose first language is English!!

Oral presentation

I wish a happy New Year to all my colleagues, and good luck in all the oral presentations. But better than luck is our will, and we cannot put in our minds that we are not capable to do a good presentation. The big thing is made of little things. Some of the students that are less confident in oral presentations, with some little tips and some practice, manage to do a good presentation in our last class. Keep on!

Many students are using "to bet" for the Portuguese word "apostar". People are writing in their TWA that companies are "betting on" innovation to be successful.

In English you "bet" on the horses. You "bet" when you are gambling at the casino.

What companies do is they "invest in" innovation, the don't bet on it.

Branding blind test

Let's see if on today's class we are going to do the blind usage test, and discriminate between MoetChandom, Raposeira or Asti Cinzano. In the past class, I don't know who had the idea of doing it with cokes, but I think it was a creative way to show the power of branding. It proved, once again, that many of the best-known brands are products where it is difficult to differentiate one supplier from another. The marketing strategy (where is included brand management) is what makes the difference.

Citing websites

I'm worried by the way many students still think that anything that comes from a Website is an authoritative source for their TWA. Many people even think that a commercial site selling an "innovative" service or product is a reliable source for information about innovation.

I think I will dedicate one of our next lessons to analysing Internet sources. And I'll start putting some sites in the sidebar that help you prepare for this.

A translation experiment on this blog

I have set up the Google automatic translator to translate all the posts on this blog to Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese. Have a look at the translations. I suppose it is possible to make some sense of the translation ... But I laughed my head off when I saw that Bill's name had been translated to "Conta" in Portuguese.

No more exercises - part III

Like Teacher Beverly said, nothing is ever done. Well, I have to complete my previous post, and when I've said "no more exercises" I wanted to mean those exercises like we are used to do. Not those we are doing at our classes! If my memory is right, we haven't done twice the same tipe of exercise, wich means that we have always a different way to learn. Not only english, because the same strategies that I've learn in the IE classes I use to understand Italian texts. It works!

I hope that my colleagues don't misunderstood my posts with "graxa", because the ideia here is to share my point of view about the classes, and if I'm enjoying them, I can only say good things about it. Maybe others could give their oppinion too - two persons can go to the cinema and get out with different oppinions. By the way, what should be the english word for "graxa"?

Wallet share

I have discovered the word partnership and meaning of "Share of wallet". This is what it says on BuzzWhack ("dedicated to de-mystifying buzzwords"):

"wallet share, share of wallet: At some point, trying to increase market share gets expensive. So, companies go after a bigger share of your wallet. Example: Since you can only consume so many colas a day, a soft drink company will try to increase its share of your wallet by selling you peanuts or chips produced by another division of its company."

You can access the entire BuzzWhack Dictionary from their main page. It could be helpful for other expressions.

Automatic translators

Some of you have been translating the text about "Brand Wars" (check it out on our Wiki).

Most of you said that the automatic translator wasn't very helpful as the translation of the text to Portuguese either didn't make sense or looked comic! Let me tell you that each semester I get some very funny translations from students who used an automatic translator for their work. Then they are suprised when I give their work a low mark!

However, IF you are smart and use the translator strategically, at the same time as your brain, your imagination, the dictionary and your language knowledge, then it can be one more tool to help you to make sense of a text.

Here are two translaters from Altavista's Babelfish and from Google's language tools. I'll put these links in the sidebar.

False friends

Some people were using false friends in their TWA plan. False friends are those words in Portuguese and English that sound the same but mean something different.

"Actual" in Portuguese does NOT mean "actual" in English. And "actualmente" is NOT the same as "actually".
"Pretender" in Portuguese does NOT mean "pretend" in English.
"Assistir" in Portuguese does NOT mean "assist" in English.

If you don't know what they mean you can check out these lists of false friends. There is a list of Portuguese/English false friends on "Marco's English Grammar and Testing Page". There is also an excercise to test your knowledge of false friends. If you are interested, this list from Wikipedia has common false friends between all languages and English.

What do these expressions mean?

Someone on the Wiki has asked what these expressions mean:

I am also curious to know what they mean as I haven't heard most of them. Remind me - is "share of wallet" a direct translation of something like "quota de carteiro"? I'm trying to think of what the equivalent word partnership could be in English.

It's great to have something to look forward to

Today I started looking at the reformulated TWA plans. I was happy to see that I will have some interesting articles to read during Christmas! Each semester I am always pleasantly suprised by the creativity and good work of some of my students. I think that this semester will be no exception.

This is the first time I have evaluated students plans and I am sure it will lead to a better final work. I look forward to seeing if it does. At the moment it certainly looks as though the articles will be more analytical and more stimulating and I anticipate that I will be learning a few new things about international business issues in the Portuguese context.

I just hope that there are not too many students who directly copy or translate other articles. Those articles are usually the most boring and difficult to read. They are even more difficult to read than an article that has language mistakes but where you can see that the person has really internalised and analysed the topic in their own way.

No more exercises - part II

In the beguinning I thought that Inglês Empresarial would use the same method as all the English Classes I had before: exercises, reading texts and doing homeworks. It was very boring and not practical for nowadays. Instead of that, we are having a new method wich helps not only to develop our English, but also to do things we haven't done in other school subjects yet: small presentation for an oral presentation, single oral presentation, TWA plan, an article for a journal...
We also have a mailing list to share ideas and doubts, a wiki page with lots of usefull expressions, and a blog to comment about our classes. For me, is a revolutionary method that is beyond all exercises we can do.

No more exercises

I think I've learned an important lesson. I see a vocabulary exercise as a first step in helping students to identify patterns in the language. Once they identify the patterns, then they can transfer this knowledge of patterns to help them understand or write other texts. In the exercise I don't care if they get the "correct" answer, I care only that they are able to work out the pattern.

But now I realise that if I set an exercise, then the objective is to finish the exercise and put in the correct answer (even if it's copied from the answers or a colleague). That leads to superficial learning - so I must stop with exercises as a way of helping students to see the patterns in language.

Bruno Cruz discovered a Glossário of Marketing terms in Portuguese and English that was produced and published by António Queiroz and João Rodrigues, two students at Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu. They invite people who use it to help keep it up-to-date with new and changing words and meanings. I will add this glossary to our blog links and also suggest that we keep a record of any new words that we could add to help keep the glossary updated. I hope in tomorrow's presentations that no-one tells me that they don't know about the Portuguese context. I can't imagine an American or an British person talking about innovation from a Portuguese perspective and not knowing anything about innovation in their own country. Why do I often hear my students telling me that they know about entrepreneurs, innovation, brand management and global marketing - but who say that they don't know any Portuguese examples?

Here is an article by Peter Wise in "The Banker" about Portugal becoming a global investor and getting "Back in the Game". He quotes Miguel Athayde Marques, chairman and chief executive of Euronext Lisbon, to say that there is growing internationalisation of Portuguese companies:

The first theme/topic we will be exploring in the class is Global Marketing. I found two definitions on the Internet here and here which are reasonably helpful. I also put a vocabulary excercise in the reprografia called "What is Marketing?" This excercise comes from a book that is in the Centro de Documentação called "Management and Marketing" by Ian Mackenzie, LTP. The book also has the answers to the excercise.

Fifteen students came to the class today - all women. Most people live in Setúbal and an above average percentage of people aare interested in the arts - music, dance and painting. Everyone's main motivation was - finishing their degree.

I've put the programa in the reprografia. (It's funny how I have to say those words in Portuguese because it sounds too strange to say I have put the courrse syllabus in the photocopy shop). There is also a copy in the Inglês Empresarial Yahoo Discussion Group.

Two days before the semester begins and I have decided to start a blog where we can put links and resources for students during the semester. I shall probably also write some thoughts and reflections about the classes as we go through the semester. Hopefully students will comment on them.
