Knowing the Portuguese context

I hope in tomorrow's presentations that no-one tells me that they don't know about the Portuguese context. I can't imagine an American or an British person talking about innovation from a Portuguese perspective and not knowing anything about innovation in their own country. Why do I often hear my students telling me that they know about entrepreneurs, innovation, brand management and global marketing - but who say that they don't know any Portuguese examples?

Be Cool and the Six Marketeers

The Six Marketeers and Be Cool have put up some of the key words and expressions for global marketing in their Twiki. I wonder if someone from the Six Marketeers could tell me what "share of the wallet" means as I have no idea.

A number of students who are not at ALTE 2

I realise from the "fichas" that there are a number of students who do not have the minimum level for doing inglês Empresarial. I have put some links to general vocabulary and grammar excercises under "Links". You need to scroll down to near the bottom of the page.

English class - Friday 7th October

Some students have told me that they won't make it to the class because they will be going to "Dia do IPS". I will leave a vocabulary excercise in the reprografia about marketing which they will find helpful to do.

Portugal - back in the game

Here is an article by Peter Wise in "The Banker" about Portugal becoming a global investor and getting "Back in the Game". He quotes Miguel Athayde Marques, chairman and chief executive of Euronext Lisbon, to say that there is growing internationalisation of Portuguese companies:

“Portuguese companies have traditionally been passive exporters. At the beginning of the 1990s only a handful of groups were investing abroad. Now there are hundreds of Portuguese companies with an international presence, several of them world leaders in their sector. Internationalisation is very demanding in terms of capital and we expect an increasing number of companies to turn to the stock market to fund expansion.”

Portugal for international investors

Here is a site from "Global Edge" that aims to "sell" Portugal to international investors. It is quite interesting to see the companies that they list and their presentation of Portugal as a country in which to invest.

Cleaning up after students

One of the "turmas" today left a lot of rubbish, like dirty pieces of paper, in our room. I expect they would have been embarrassed if they had known that I was cleaning up after them.
